Merton Heritage Service – Artifacts Wanted

Can you help?

Merton Heritage Service  is currently designing a range of resources for reminiscence work to support people living with dementia. They are also devising special displays to form a sensory exhibition, open to all, but of particular benefit for people with visual and hearing impairments, adults with autism and learning difficulties.

As part of this work Merton Heritage Service need your help hunting for objects that can be included in themed memory boxes and heritage displays…

Local material is of particular interest, but non-Merton items that could help to trigger memories would also be of use.

They are trying to secure materials from a variety of sources, so could you please spread the word among family, friends, neighbours in case they have items that they might be willing to donate / lend to assist these projects.

Items of Interest:

Cinema:

  • Cinema tickets, programmes, film posters

 Sports ( cricket, tennis, golf, rugby, hockey, athletics, football, swimming ):

  • Club /team sport badges, certificates, miniature cricket bats, match programmes, cricket gloves / pads ( small size ), cricket stumps and bails, school sports memorabilia, football / rugby shirt, match tickets

High Street / Shopping:

  • Whicker basket, advertising material for particular shops / brands, old packaging and tins, old (pre-decimal currency ), old ( 1950s – 80s ) shop receipts

Transport/Travel:

  • Old bus / tram / rail / underground tickets; station signs, 1950s – 80s road/rail / tram network maps
  • Models of buses, trams, trains ( steam, diesel and underground )
  • Station / bus / London Transport staff caps / badges
  • Old travel documents / defunct passport
  • Old driver’s license
  • Car / scooter badges, mirrors and pennants

Work / Industry:

  • Old pay slips, wage packets
  • Morris & Co. or Liberty print blocks, fabric samples or scarves
  • Pascall’s sweet tins or boxes
  • Renshaw’s Marzipan packaging or Ads
  • Books, pamphlets or leather samples from Connolly’s
  • Triang toys ( especially small boats, cars, trains, planes ), Pedigree dolls, Small doll’s house / doll’s house furniture, small walkers and pull along toys / Lines Bros advertising material
  • Merton Board Mills – packaging samples, advertising material
  • Promotional material for paint factories such as Harland’s and Hadfield’s
  • Promotional material, memorabilia or objects linked to local employers such as BOC, Shannon Office Furniture; Decca, Pye, Benninga’s Margarine; Palmer’s Metalworks, Fry’s Metals, Mullards, Dean’s Rag Books, United Dairies

Fashion ( 1950s – 80s ):

  • 1950s – 80s dress or knitting patterns
  • Knitting needles / sewing kit, crochet hook
  • Old dress /suit labels or receipts
  • Fashion accessories – gloves, hats, costume jewellery / 1960s – 80s plastic jewellery, small ( unwanted small fur collar / stole ), handbags
  • 1960s/70s/80s dresses, Mini skirts, A line or maxi dress, flared trousers, winklepicker shoes ( male / female ), platform shoes, drainpipe trousers, crepe-soled shoes, petticoats
  • Hair oil ( brylcreem ) pots /promotional material
  • Old makeup compacts, curling tongs, Kirby grips and rollers
  • Promotional material or items linked to local boutiques or clothing manufacturers

Housing ( 1950s – 80s ):

  • Defunct rent books / utility bills or receipts for contemporary furniture
  • Housing sale particulars /defunct contracts
  • Small domestic items – contemporary ornaments, chair backs and doilies, period kitchenware & pans, wallpaper samples, carpet / curtain fabric, small dressing table sets, coal irons

 Childhood ( 1950s – 80s ):

  • Small items of school uniform – ties, caps, blazer badges
  • School certificates, exercise books, sports awards, class photos
  • School play programmes
  • Ink / cartridge pens and / or inkwells
  • Small toys
  • Small items of childhood clothing – baby shawls, shoes, teething rings, rattles
  • Plastic potty
  • Baby’s bottle, Terry nappy and safety nappy pin
  • Sweet advertising / packaging
  • Items linked to childhood hobbies – e.g. model planes, stamp albums, crystal sets.
  • Items linked to youth clubs and organisations – cub/brownie/scout/guide / Girl’s Brigade / Woodcraft folk memorabilia, badges, scarves, woggles
  • Comics

Teenage years ( 1950s – 80s ):

  • Items or memorabilia linked to youth / sports clubs, ATC, Sea Cadets, Girl’s Brigade, local dance groups, choirs, skiffle or Rock and Roll groups
  • Concert tickets / programmes
  • Record sleeves
  • Material linked to R G Jones Records
  • Teen magazines
  • Small items of teen fashion / accessories
  • Promotional material or memorabilia linked to local coffee/milk bars, discos and nightclubs
