John Sargeant

John has always lived in the Borough, and in Merton Park since 1974. He went to Hillcross and Rutlish schools before winning a Surrey scholarship to Charterhouse School. After taking degrees in mathematics and economics at Sussex University he followed a career in the energy industry, including nearly 30 years working for BP. 

John sits on the Licensing Committee of the London Borough of Merton.  He is also a member of the Sustainable Communities Scrutiny Panel.  He was a member of a Task Group of the Panel which reviewed the the cleanliness and overall appearance of the Borough's town centres.  John represents Ward Councillors on Safer Merton's Local Multi Agency Problem Solving Group for Morden.

John also chaired a Task Group established in December 2010 to review the use of Wheelie Bins which reported in mid 2011.

John is a member of the Nelson Hospital Reference Group.  He has been a member of the MPWRA Committee for several years and recently set up their website. 

During his career, John's work took him and his family to the US and the Far East where he established several new marketing businesses for BP.  John now has his own part-time consulting business offering support to marketing operations. 

John is married to Judy and they have two grown-up children who went to Poplar and Merton Park Schools.  He is a proud grandfather and a member of both the London Library and the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House.

His most recent claim to faim: performing Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" with 100 other men on stage at the Wembley Arena to 10,000 cheering "fans".
